Learn to stay in the language. Start by asking to speak slower, repeat something, record a phrase, express preferences, etc.

At the start you won’t understand everything people say, and that won’t change for a while. Phase 2 gives you the phrases to deal with it, without switching to English.

What you can do after this phase

Keeping a conversation in the language: ask people to slow down, repeat, explain a word or record a phrase, and say what you like and what you want. And because phrases are frames (“Can I have…?”, “I’d like to…”), you can swap a word and say thousands of sentences. That’s what makes your first real conversations possible.

On the way to 1000

150 is 15% of the way. From here, new phrases come faster, because you can ask for them in the language itself.

What helps now

  • Imagine the situation. When you practise a phrase, picture where you’ll say it: at the market, on the phone, in your first real conversation. It sticks better.
  • Take your phrases for a walk. Listen-to-all mode plays a session with the phone locked.
  • Look for chances to say your phrases. To a waiter, a neighbour, a colleague who speaks the language. Every phrase you get to use makes you want the next ten.
  • Look at the grammar map. The key grammar topics on your language’s page, so you recognise the patterns when they show up. You don’t need to study them.
  • Practise before you add. Keep phrases available for practice at zero, then add new ones.

What gets in the way

  • Saying “I know it” too easily. If you tap “Yes” too quickly, you’ll end up with a lot of phrases you don’t know but that have long intervals. Be strict about saying it 100% right.
  • Feeling the phrases are pointless. We promise that these phrases will be useful in your next conversation. And you’ll see while listening that they’ll come by. Your first real conversation comes in phase 3, with 150 phrases ready.
  • The free limits. Your phrases still fit the free plan: after the first 30, it adds 3 a day, so you reach 150 in about 40 days without paying. Though maybe think about upgrading. Listening in the app is free for the first 30 minutes; for the 150 minutes of this phase, you need Premium. Pricing →
