🌴 Your journey

From your first phrase to 1000

Lingophant counts your progress in two numbers: phrases you know and minutes you’ve watched. Five phases take you from your first phrase to 1000, and each phase is something you can do in the language, not a certificate.

How progress is counted

Phrases in memory

Phrases you know right now: everything on your phone that isn’t due for practice. When phrases need practice, the number dips; practise them and it’s back.

Minutes watched

Time with videos and content in the app: the listening player, your language’s page, Discover.

Each phase has one milestone for both, and you move on when both reach it. Your journey card is on the Add Content and Practice tabs; Learn more… opens the page for your phase.

On the free plan, your first 30 minutes of listening in the app are free; after that, listening in the app comes with Premium. Pricing β†’

The most important part: a routine

With a routine, you make progress every day without thinking about it. Once you have one, your counts start climbing on their own, and you’re on your way to 300 phrases, where you start having real fun in the language.

The five phases

How long it takes

That depends on the language and on the time you put in. A session takes 15 to 30 minutes, in time you’d lose anyway: the bus, a break, a queue. For easy languages, you can get to phase 4 in three months.

What counts are the totals, not the calendar. I learned Georgian, one of the hardest languages around, at about two hours a week: three years later I knew 1000 phrases and was pretty much fluent.

  • 1000phrases in Georgianpretty much fluent, at about two hours a week
  • 500phrases in Russianin 15 weeks, mainly on the metro
