Book that trip. You’ve earned it.
Visiting family, an adventure, a cultural trip: go there and enjoy what you can do now. Don’t be shy. Talk to the bartender, and drop that you’ve only been learning for a few months. You can be proud of yourself.
What you can do after this phase
Speaking feels close to effortless. You follow the conversation at the table, you answer without building the sentence first, and you can spend whole evenings or nights with people who don’t speak your language.
On the way to 1000
This is it: 1000 is the goal of the method. How long it took depends on the language and the time you put in. What you have now is the same for everyone who gets here.
What helps now
- Keep practising. It’s free, forever. A few minutes a day keeps the phrases that come due where they are.
- Keep recording. Everything new you hear from people is still the best material you’ll get.
- Watch what native speakers watch. Series, YouTube, the news. Watching content also helps you warm up for a trip.
What gets in the way
- Stopping. Life gets busy, and that’s fine: your phrases stay on your phone. Nothing like “I lost all my French from high school”: open the app and reactivate your vocabulary.
What’s next
- Keep going. There’s no milestone after 1000, only enjoying the language, which you certainly are. You did it.
- Learn another language. You know how it works now. The next one is always easier.
