Phase 1 of 5 · 30 phrases · 30 minutes

Getting started

In the app

Find a routine of 15-30 minutes per day, for our highly effective methods. When and where works for you?

The first 30 phrases and 30 minutes are about one thing: making Lingophant part of your day. Your first 30 phrases are free, and so are your first 30 minutes of listening in the app, so this whole phase is free.

What you can do after this phase

You know at least one phrase to say to native speakers, probably a few: a greeting, a thank-you, who you are. More important, you know the three things you’ll do from now on: get phrases, practise them in sessions of 12, and listen. That’s the whole method. Phase 2 builds on this routine and adds the phrases that keep a conversation going.

On the way to 1000

30 is 3% of 1000. It doesn’t sound like much, but your first phrases are the ones you’ll say most often, and the routine you build now is what gets you through the other 970.

What helps now

  • Pick a daily time and a place. Attach the session to something you already do: the morning coffee, the metro, the walk with the dog. Ten minutes every day beats an hour and a half once a week.
  • Start with the starter phrasesets. Greetings, introductions, reactions: the first sets of your language in the Content Library. Your first steps →
  • Say every phrase out loud before you play the recording. The app can test you; the speaking is up to you.
  • Watch one short video twice, with subtitles in both languages. You won’t catch much the first time, and that’s how it should be.
  • Let the app remind you. Choose a time for your daily reminder, and keep your streak going.

What gets in the way

  • Starting at all. Deciding what to do takes as much energy as doing it. So don’t decide: at your time, open the app and tap Practice.
  • Videos that feel too fast. Normal at the start. Pick short videos, read the translation first, and watch them again. In our experience it clicks after three to five videos.
  • Getting annoyed by repetition. It’s more intense than tapping through a game, because every minute is active recall. Like in real life. That is exactly why it saves time.
