🧑🏫 Grammar overview in 9 chapters
Below is an overview of the most important grammar topics. Each chapter has a short explanation and recommended videos.
While memorizing phrases, you’ll likely recognize patterns from grammar. You can add a note or question to a card and get it answered next time you’re with a teacher.
Vowel Harmony A1
Vowel harmony is the single most important sound rule in Kazakh: every suffix you attach to a word must use vowels that match the vowels in the root word. Kazakh vowels are divided into two groups — back vowels (а, о, ұ, ы) and front vowels (е, ө, ү, і). If the last vowel in a root is a back vowel, all suffixes follow with back vowels; if it is a front vowel, suffixes use front vowels. For example, the plural suffix is -лар after back-vowel roots (үй → үйлер, ‘houses’) and -лер after front-vowel roots (кітап → кітаптар, ‘books’). Every single grammatical ending in Kazakh obeys this rule without exception.
The best way to internalise vowel harmony is to listen actively in the app and notice how suffixes ‘echo’ the vowel colour of the root. Colour-code words mentally: warm/back or cool/front. Once this clicks, you will stop guessing which suffix form to use — you will simply feel it. This unlocks your ability to attach any new suffix correctly to any word you learn, making your speech sound natural rather than foreign-accented, and helping you decode written Kazakh much faster.
- Kazakh Lessons 21-The Rule of Harmony – Maksat Imangazi: Directly targets Kazakh vowel harmony for foreign learners with a clear, structured lesson at an appropriate duration and the highest view count among Kazakh-specific candidates.
- Kazakh Lessons #2-The Rule of Harmony and types of consonants – Dariman Orazbek: A concise beginner-focused Kazakh lesson that covers the rule of harmony alongside consonant types, making it a practical A1-level complement to longer explanations.
SOV Word Order & the Verb at the End A1
Kazakh is a Subject-Object-Verb language, meaning the verb almost always comes at the very end of the sentence. Where English says ‘I eat an apple,’ Kazakh says ‘Мен алма жеймін’ — literally ‘I apple eat.’ This applies to simple statements, questions, and complex sentences alike. Adjectives also precede the nouns they describe, and postpositions follow their nouns instead of preceding them as English prepositions do. The overall logic is: context and details first, action last.
When listening to Kazakh, train yourself to hold the meaning in suspension until you hear the final verb — that is where the core meaning lands. When speaking, build your sentence by placing the subject first, then all objects and time/place phrases, and save the verb for the end. Once you adopt this frame, you will be able to construct grammatically correct sentences with any vocabulary you know from the app, and you will stop accidentally placing verbs in the middle of your sentences the way English speakers typically do.
- Lesson #1 Introduction to Kazakh Grammar – Word Order & Simple Sentences – Kazakh is easy: Directly addresses Kazakh SOV word order and simple sentence structure for English-speaking beginners, making it a perfect match for this A1 topic.
- 4 принципа тюркской грамматики: от гармонии гласных до порядка слов – TABULA RASA: Covers Turkic (including Kazakh) word order principles with a structured linguistic explanation, useful as supplementary context for understanding why SOV order is fundamental to Kazakh.
Case Suffixes (Who Does What to Whom) A1
Kazakh has seven grammatical cases, each expressed by a suffix added to the noun rather than by word order or prepositions. The most essential cases for beginners are: Nominative (no suffix — the subject), Accusative (-ны/-ні/-ды/-ді/-ты/-ті — the definite direct object), Dative (-ға/-ге/-қа/-ке — direction or recipient, like ‘to’), Locative (-да/-де/-та/-те — location, like ‘at/in’), and Ablative (-дан/-ден/-тан/-тен — origin, like ‘from’). For example, үйде means ‘at home,’ үйге means ‘to (the) home,’ and үйден means ‘from home.’ Each suffix also follows vowel harmony, so there are two or more vowel variants of each.
Learn cases by anchoring each one to a concrete question word: Dative answers ‘where to?’, Locative answers ‘where?’, Ablative answers ‘where from?’ Group the phrases you learn in the app by which case they use rather than memorising each word separately. Once you have internalised even three or four cases, you will be able to express location, movement, giving, and receiving in natural Kazakh without needing separate preposition words, which dramatically speeds up your sentence building.
- Казахский язык с нуля: творительный и винительный падеж – Школа Пифагор: Directly covers the accusative case (винительный/табыс септік), one of the most essential cases for A1 learners, with a beginner-friendly structured explanation in an appropriate duration.
- Самый простой урок: дательный падеж(Барыс септік) в казахском языке | урок 5 – Школа Пифагор: Focuses specifically on the dative case (барыс септік), another core A1 case for Kazakh learners, presented simply and within an ideal duration for beginners.
- Казахский язык для начинающих | Исходный падеж – Школа Пифагор: Covers the ablative/locative case (шығыс септік) with clear suffix explanations, complementing the other case videos for a well-rounded introduction to Kazakh case suffixes.
Personal Verb Endings (Conjugation by Person) A1
In Kazakh, the verb ending changes to show who is performing the action, and subject pronouns can often be dropped because the ending makes the subject clear. The present-continuous tense (the most common tense in everyday speech) is formed with the suffix -ып/-іп/-п plus a personal ending: мен жазып жатырмын (I am writing), сен жазып жатырсың (you are writing), ол жазып жатыр (he/she is writing), біз жазып жатырмыз (we are writing). The simple present-future uses -а/-е/-й plus endings: мен жазамын, сен жазасың, ол жазады. All endings obey vowel harmony.
A useful strategy is to learn each tense as a complete mini-paradigm — write out all six persons for one common verb like бару (‘to go’) and chant them until they feel automatic. Notice that first- and second-person endings often resemble the personal pronouns мен, сен, біз, сіздер, which makes them easier to remember. Mastering personal endings lets you talk about what you, others, and groups of people do in the present and near future — the backbone of everyday conversation — and allows you to drop pronouns naturally, just as fluent speakers do.
- КАЗАХСКИЙ С НУЛЯ: ЛИЧНЫЕ ОКОНЧАНИЯ: УРОК 2 – Школа казахского языка QAZLINE: Directly covers personal verb endings in Kazakh (личные окончания) at a beginner level with a structured lesson format, making it the most relevant match for this A1 grammar topic.
- Kazakh present tense|future tense – Kazakh Tutorial: Covers Kazakh present tense formation in English with mention of personal endings, offering a complementary beginner-friendly explanation of how verbs conjugate by person.
Possessive Suffixes (My, Your, His/Her…) A2
Kazakh expresses possession by attaching a suffix directly to the noun instead of using separate words like ‘my’ or ‘your.’ The core possessive suffixes are: -ым/-ім (my), -ың/-ің (your informal), -ы/-і (his/her/its), -ымыз/-іміз (our), -ыңыз/-іңіз (your formal/polite), -лары/-лері (their). So үй (‘house’) becomes үйім (‘my house’), үйің (‘your house’), үйі (‘his/her house’). These suffixes also interact with vowel harmony, giving two sets of vowel variants. Possessives are used constantly in Kazakh — with body parts, family members, places, and objects — making this one of the highest-frequency patterns you will encounter.
Practise by converting nouns you already know into all their possessive forms as a daily drill. Pay special attention to the third-person suffix -ы/-і, which is also used in the Genitive-Possessive construction (the Kazakh equivalent of ‘the teacher’s book’: мұғалімнің кітабы). Once possessive suffixes feel automatic, you will be able to talk about your family, your belongings, your daily life, and understand when others describe theirs — a huge range of natural, personal conversation.
Negation (Making Sentences Negative) A2
Kazakh negation works differently depending on the verb form. For most finite verbs, you insert the negative suffix -ма/-ме/-ба/-бе/-па/-пе directly into the verb before the tense suffix: жазамын (‘I write’) → жазбаймын (‘I do not write’); келеді (‘he comes’) → келмейді (‘he does not come’). For the verb ‘to be’ or for nominal sentences (sentences without an action verb), the separate negative word емес (‘not/is not’) is used: ол дәрігер (‘he is a doctor’) → ол дәрігер емес (‘he is not a doctor’). The suffix form of the negative also respects vowel harmony and consonant mutation rules.
A practical tip is to learn the negative form of every new verb phrase you encounter in the app at the same time as the positive — treat them as a pair. Notice that the negative suffix always appears before the tense marker, so the structure is root + NEG + tense + person. Once you control negation, you can immediately double your expressive range: every statement you can make, you can also deny or contradict, which is essential for real conversation, clarification, and everyday situations like saying you don’t have something or somewhere isn’t open.
Forming Questions (Yes/No and Question Words) A2
Kazakh forms yes/no questions by adding the question particle ма/ме/ба/бе/па/пе to the end of a statement — the word order stays exactly the same, unlike English where you invert subject and verb. For example, ‘Сен келесің’ (‘You are coming’) becomes ‘Сен келесің бе?’ (‘Are you coming?’). The particle form depends on vowel harmony. For content questions (who, what, where, etc.), Kazakh uses question words — кім (who), не (what), қайда (where), қашан (when), неге/неліктен (why), қалай (how), қанша (how many/much) — placed in the position of the unknown element, again without changing overall word order.
A quick habit to build: whenever you learn a new sentence in the app, immediately turn it into a yes/no question by adding the particle, and then try replacing one word with the matching question word to make a content question. This three-way drilling (statement → yes/no question → content question) tripling your output from a single input phrase. Once you master these patterns, you can ask for directions, check information, order food with modifications, and hold the basic back-and-forth of real Kazakh conversations confidently.
Postpositions & Spatial Expressions A2
Instead of prepositions that come before a noun (like English ‘in,’ ‘on,’ ‘under’), Kazakh uses postpositions that follow the noun, often combined with a case suffix. The most common postpositions include: үстінде (on top of), астында (under), ішінде (inside), алдында (in front of), артында (behind), жанында (next to/beside), арасында (between). The noun before a postposition typically takes the Genitive case suffix (-ның/-нің/-дың/-дің/-тың/-тің): үстелдің үстінде — ‘on top of the table.’ Many postpositions also have directional (-да/-де → -ға/-ге) and ablative (-дан/-ден) variants to express motion toward or away.
Learn postpositions in sets of three — location, direction, and source — for example: үстінде / үстіне / үстінен (‘on / onto / from on top of’). Visualise a simple room and describe where objects are using these words, which is a classic technique for cementing spatial vocabulary. With postpositions mastered, you can give and understand directions, describe where things are, and navigate real environments using Kazakh — immediately practical for travel, shopping, and daily life situations.
Verbal Nouns & Participles (Connecting Clauses) B1
One of the most powerful — and distinctly Kazakh — features of the grammar is the ability to turn verbs into nouns or adjectives using suffixes, rather than using the conjunction-heavy clause structures of English. The key suffixes are: -у/-ю (verbal noun/infinitive: бару — ‘going/to go’), -ған/-ген/-қан/-кен (past participle used as adjective or noun: барған адам — ‘the person who went’), and -атын/-етін (present/habitual participle: баратын адам — ‘the person who goes/used to go’). These participial forms are used constantly to replace relative clauses like ‘who,’ ‘which,’ and ‘that’ in English.
The best way to approach these forms is to notice them in phrases from the app and analyse them piece by piece: identify the verb root, then the participial suffix, then any case ending. Rather than memorising rules abstractly, collect real examples — мен барған жер (‘the place I went’), ол айтқан сөз (‘the word he said’) — and treat each as a reusable template. Once you recognise and produce these forms, you will be able to describe people, places, and events with complex, nuanced Kazakh — moving beyond simple sentences into the flowing, clause-rich speech that native speakers actually use.
