Nesse vídeo, eu vou gravar sobre a minha cidade. Falar um pouco sobre minha cidade. Eu moro em uma cidade perto da praia. Na verdade, eu moro numa ilha, mas a gente que mora aqui… a gente não percebe, ou não pensa o tempo todo que a gente mora numa ilha… Eu acho que é porque quando você olha assim não dá para perceber… tá certo que… quando você tá na praia… mas, como a praia é muito longa, você não percebe que você tá numa ilha.

É uma cidade fantástica de morar, né? E o custo de vida aqui não é muito alto, não é uma cidade muito violenta e tem muita praia aqui perto também. É uma cidade muito bonita, muito bem organizada, aqui é uma capital também, então tem tudo que você precisa, mas ainda assim é uma cidade bem pequena. Então, tem a vantagem de ter menos estresse e menos trânsito do que uma cidade grande como São Paulo ou Rio de Janeiro, por exemplo. 

As pessoas aqui são poucos fechadas para um padrão brasileiro pelo menos, mas para um padrão europeu talvez não, mas para um padrão brasileiro, as pessoas aqui são bastante fechadas. O atendimento nas lojas não costuma ser muito bom. O sistema de transporte público aqui funciona muito bem, é muito bem pensado, é muito bem feito, mas os ônibus estão sempre lotados e demora.. os ônibus demoram um pouco para chegar também, mas, no geral, é um bom sistema. 

Eu já morei em outra cidade, já morei na cidade maior que essa aqui, numa capital, mas eu não gostei de lá porque lá o clima é muito seco, tinha muito trânsito e era uma cidade muito grande. Então, sempre que você queria sair de um lugar e ir para outro lugar você demorava uma hora, 2 horas e aqui você consegue fazer tudo em 15 minutos, meia hora. Então, eu não consegui me acostumar com a cidade. E lá não tinha praia. Eu senti muita falta do vento que vem do mar e do clima úmido. E, não sei, as coisas no litoral são muito diferentes das coisas de uma cidade no centro ou nas montanhas. Mas eu gosto muito da cidade, da minha cidade. Eu acho que, que… eu acho que a qualidade de vida é excelente. Quem mora aqui geralmente não quer se mudar para outro lugar. Então, é uma cidade muito boa de morar. É isso aí.

My city is actually an island, although we don’t really feel anything different because of that. Well, apart from the fact that we are surrounded by the sea. The funny thing is that this is not something visible, so we are mostly unaware of it (you may even find people that have no clue that they live on an island).

Well, Vitória is an amazing city to live in. There are a lot of beaches nearby, it’s quite organized and beautiful. It’s not a very violent city too (which is really relevant here in Brazil).

Although being a small city, Vitória is a capital. Therefore, you have all the services that a metropolis should offer without all the heavy traffic and stress from bigger cities, like São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro.

Brazilians are also famous for their hospitality. However, for a Brazilian standard, people here can be quite reserved. Maybe that’s why the service in shops around here tends to be terrible! That’s a very local problem, though: if you get to the neighbouring cities, you may notice a difference already. In any case, if you are familiar with an European standard for hospitality, you are going to be surprised with ours anyways.

I do like how the public transport system works here. I think there are places with worse services. Ours is very well thought out, but we do have a problem with capacity (buses are always crowded on rush hours) and punctuality (also something Brazilians are very famous for…). But in general, it’s a good system.

I have lived in another city once, another capital, much bigger than Vitória. But I didn’t like it there. The climate was so dry (I was used to live in an island!) and the city was just huge. Whenever you wanted to go somewhere, it would take you 1-2 hours by car. Here, you can do everything easily in 15-30 minutes.

I couldn’t get used to the city. There was no beach nearby! It was never so clear to me how much I like the breeze that comes from the sea and the humid climate we get from it. And I don’t know, I felt that life is different on the coast. Things seem to go by more slowly and people are more relaxed. Maybe it was just an impression, but I really like my city. I think that the quality of life here is excellent.

People who live here usually don’t want to move out and those who move out often want to come back.

Quick Grammar

In the last two videos that we have studied, you have seen the verb ser. As in several other languages, it’s an irregular verb.

Both ser and estar mean “to be”, but they are a bit different. As a simplification, we could say that ser is more permanent in meaning, while estar is more transitive.
