The value of knowing a new language
Let’s think about learning languages from a monetary perspective. How much is it worth?
It can improve the travel experience tremendously. Become that friend who can help with local problems. Feel safe in environments. Show respect and be invited to a seat at the table. This and every future trip there might be 50 % nicer?
A big part of a career depends on communication and a big part of communication depends on comfort in the language. So a language can make you more productive to the company, which can result in promotions or job stability. The economist estimates that knowledge of a foreign language results in tens of thousands of extra income over the duration of a career, if we assume a 2% improvement in productivity.
Sometimes it allows you to speak the language of your family members. The value of being able to do that is immeasurable. You can connect to a new family. And if you’re from a mixed household, it opens a way to really express yourself with that side of the family.
Even for older people it can be interesting. There is little evidence that older people can learn a language worse than young people, they just have less frequent and less quality of exposure. Plus, there’s research that shows that learning a language can postpone Dementia by like 4 years. That’s more than any medicine, and such a medicine would likely sell for 1.000’s of Euros.
The value of learning a language can therefore be thousands of euros. And that even excludes the time and frustration we saved you by working efficiently.
An app subscription that doesn’t really work costs 80+€. A language course in a school with a mediocre one-size-fits-all approach can cost like 500€. It would be nice if you can support us with something in this range, but it’s up to you of course.
